The Twin Cities  Musicians Union has “been overwhelmed by the generosity of those coming to our assistance” during their recent challenges in supporting both the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

September Find A Teacher Workshop Connected Students with Teachers

The Tucson Federation of Musicians (AFM Local 33) held their first annual “Find a Teacher Workshop” on September 21, 2013, at the University School of Music.

Over 25 union members participated, giving the 63 workshop attendees free ten minute mini-lessons.  Nearly all the orchestral instruments were represented, as well as guitar, piano, and saxophone.  Students had the opportunity to meet and work with one or more teachers of their instrument, and were encouraged to follow up by scheduling further private lessons.

In addition to the workshop, attendees enjoyed free refreshments, a varied selection of short live performances by union members, and were automatically entered in a raffle for concert tickets and recordings by local artists.

Brian Hicks and LosBros, along with many other union members provided excellent entertainment at the workshop.

The workshop was advertised directly to public school music programs, on the Tucson Federation website, and via newspaper and radio ads.  In addition, the Tucson Federation had workshop informational material prominently displayed during its participation in the annual Pima Area Labor Federation Labor Day Fair.  The workshop was designed to create professional opportunities for its membership, and to reach out to the community in general.  The Tucson Federation of Musicians looks forward to repeating the event next  year.

Tucson Federation of Musicians Supports our Brothers and Sisters in Minnesota

At the 99th AFM Convention this summer, Timothy Zavodil, the chair of the Minnesota Orchestra negotiating committee, gave an emotional and heart wrenching account of the lockout of the Minnesota Orchestra musicians, which has been going on for almost a year now.  The story of how the musicians came together and united their community was inspiring and incredible.
In a sweep of goodwill, donations were offered to the Twin Cities Local, whose resources have been massively depleted by the lockouts of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Minnesota Orchestra this past year.  Individuals and locals alike made donations, some totaling as much as $2,000.
Local 33 is proud to report that we made a donation of $500.  This donation will help support the musicians of both orchestras, who were/still are weathering almost a year without pay.  Read more about it here:
